Side note: I hate cartridge oil filters with a passion.

I have no idea, but I’d like to point out that your previous post also involves filters.

Weird. For the record: I like Filter the band. Not so much the with cartridge variety oil filter.

The cartridge filter on my E34 is great. The filter housing points up and is in the top of the engine bay. I can see how the housing pointing down would be a pain, though.

Yeah, down and at an angle so I basically have a full cup of oil ready to spill as soon as I unthread it. It would be fine if it had a drain plug.

A cartridge filter is easier than a spin on....... why the hate?

That filter placement removes all the advantages of cartridge filters in the first place. Why in gods name would they put that down there. I always thought the inclusion of a cartridge filter on my e46(and my old e36) was a giant bonus, super easy to access and change.

Harder in my opinion. The 2.5 housing takes a ton of effort to get off no matter how carefully you “hand tight” it the previous time.

Agree 10000000%. Despise cartridge oil filters. Quick trick - clean out the cartridge housing with cleaner to remove all the old oil and residue. Make sure to dry thoroughly before reinstalling.

Agree - the 2.3 MZR in my Mazda has one. Pain in the butt. I always manage to get old oil running down my arms. Takes at least three times as long to change than a standard canister type. And I’d never feel comfortable letting some oil change jockey do it for fear they’d F it up.

I should be more specific... Brake cleaner works really well to get all the garbage out of the cartridge.

really? Where is the cartridge on yours? The one on my e36 is easy to do.

On the side of the block, hanging upside down. It’s easy to access, but never comes off easy no matter how careful I am when I put it on.

ahhh, mine is right on top in the front of the engine bay.
